House Rules - New Magic Rods

This is a listing of magic rods that may appear in my campaigns.

This list may use abbreviations to show what sourcebook the entries were drawn from. For guidance as to what sourcebooks these abbreviations reference, see my key to Sourcebook Abbreviations.

All of the material contained on this page and other pages of this blog is presented in accordance with the terms of the Open Game License.

Metamagic Rods: Metamagic rods hold the essence of a metamagic feat, but do not change the spell slot of the altered spell. All the rods described here are use activated (but casting spells in a threatened area still draws an attack of opportunity). A caster may only use one metamagic rod on any given spell, but it is permissible to combine a rod with metamagic feats possessed by the rod's wielder. In this case, only the feats possessed by the wielder adjust the spell slot of the spell being cast.

Possession of a metamagic rod does not confer the associated feat on the owner, only the ability to use the given feat a specified number of times per day. A sorcerer must still take a full-round action when using a metamagic rod, just as if using a metamagic feat he possesses.

Lesser and Greater Metamagic Rods: Normal metamagic rods can be used with spells of 6th level or lower. Lesser rods can be used with spells of 3rd level or lower, while greater rods can be used with spells of 9th level or lower.

Metamagic, Acid Lattice: The wielder can cast up to three spells per day that are enhanced with acid as though using the Acid Lattice feat.

Metamagic, Admixture: The wielder can cast up to three energy spells per day that are mixed with an additional energy as though using the Energy Admixture feat. These rods come in four different varieties, each type coded to a different elemental energy (acid, cold, electricity, or fire). The wielder can only use the effects of this rod to add energy of that particular energy type.

Metamagic, Bane Lattice: The wielder can cast up to three spells per day that are bane to a specified creature type as though using the Bane Lattice feat.

Metamagic, Blighted: The wielder can cast up to three spells per day that are blighted as though using the Blighted Spell feat. This rod bestows one negative level on any good creature attempting to wield it. The negative level remains as long as the rod is in hand and disappears when the rod is no longer wielded. This negative level never results in actual level loss, but it cannot be overcome in any way (including restoration spells) while the rod is wielded.

This negative level never results in actual level loss, but it cannot be overcome in any way (including restoration spells) while the rod is wielded.

This negative level never results in actual level loss, but it cannot be overcome in any way (including restoration spells) while the rod is wielded.

Metamagic, Imbue Weapon: This rod acts as a +1 heavy mace. In addition, the wielder can cast up to three touch spells per day that can delivered through a melee weapon as though using the Imbue Weapon feat.

Metamagic, Improved Imbue Weapon: This "rod" usually takes the form of a +1 light crossbow. In addition, the wielder can cast up to three touch spells per day that can delivered through a ranged weapon as though using the Improved Imbue Weapon feat.

Upon command, it transforms into a 5-foot-square high-quality silver mirror, just right for the scry spell (or for mirror master special abilities). it can remain in mirror form for up to one hour before reverting back to a rod, at which point it must remain a rod for an hour.

Rod of the Winds: (Book of Eldritch Might II) This 3-foot long rod, fashioned from dark blue steel, ends in a loop about 8 inches across; the loop is made from the same material as the rod itself. When you speak the command word, a small and tightly controlled gate to the Elemental Plane of Air opens within the loop. From this gate, a powerful wind gushes forth, causing havoc in a cone 80 feet long and wide. Characters within this cone must make DC 18 Fortitude saves each round or suffer the ill effects of a windstorm (as detailed in Chapter 3: Adventures in the Dungeon Master's Guide). The gate remains open for 1d6 rounds, during which time the wielder can move or redirect the cone. The gate can open four times per day.
