General Rules: Bardic Performance Effects - Sustain Spell

Sustain Spell (adapted from Path of Magic)
  • Affinity: Bardic Dancing.

  • Cost: One spell slot no more than one level lower than the affected spell.

  • Perform DC: 20.

  • Effect: You must activate this spell before the targeted spell expires. Each round the bard makes a successful DC 20 Perform check, the spell's duration is increased by a single round. If the check fails, the spell dissipates at the end of the next round. The bard may continue performing for as many rounds as he wishes to a maximum number of rounds equal to twice his Constitution score or until her fails his Perform check. This effect cannot increase the duration of spells with an instantaneous effect or that are triggered or ended by a particular event.

Note that a bard will have to continue performing virtually nonstop after the first use of this effect on a given spell, as it increases the duration of the spell by only a single round. Critical successes can alleviate this somewhat, but the wise bard will simply continue performing until he is ready to let the spell lapse. If the bard exceeds the Perform check DC by at least 10, he scores a critical success, which extends the duration of the spell by two rounds. Unless one or more critical successes are achieved during the performance, the spell will end the round after the bard stops performing.

  • Miscast: On a miscast, then spell ends immediately.
