Campaign Design - Spells: Blazing Shield

Blazing Shield (from Relics & Rituals)
Abjuration [Fire, Force]

Level: Sorcerer/Wizard 2
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Personal
Target, Effect, or Area: You
Duration: 1 minute per caster level (D)
Saving Throw: See text
Spell Resistance: See text

You cause a large shield composed of brilliant flames and invisible magical force to come into existence on your arm. The shield acts in all ways like a large shield, except that it is weightless and causes no armor check penalties. The shield gives a base +1 bonus to Armor Class against melee attacks and a +2 bonus to Armor Class against missile attacks. For every two levels of the caster, the shield grants an additional +1 to Armor Class, to a maximum of +7 against melee attacks and +8 against missile attacks. The armor bonus granted by blazing shield stacks with the armor bonus granted by mage armor.

Since the blazing shield is partially made of force, incorporeal creatures cannot bypass it as they can normal armor. Additionally, any creature that strikes a holder of a blazing shield with a natural weapon melee attack (claws, fangs, and so on) suffers 1d6 points of fire damage per strike. A successful Reflex saving throw negates the damage.

The somatic component of blazing shield requires only one hand, enabling the caster to perform it while brandishing a weapon in his other hand.
