The black bear is a forest dwelling omnivore that usually is not dangerous unless an interloper threatens its cubs or food supply. Black bears can be pure black, blond, or cinnamon in color and are rarely more than 5 feet long.

Combat
Black bears rip prey with their claws and teeth.

Skills: A black bear receives a +4 racial bonus on Swim checks.

Black Bears as Familiars
Black Bears can serve as familiars for characters eligible to obtain familiars including arcane engineers, hexblades, mind weavers, shadowsworn, sorcerers, and wizards. To do so, the character must take the Improved Familiar feat, and be at least a 5th-level caster. Arcane casters with black bear familiars gain a +2 bonus to Fortitude saves.

Black Bears as Animal Companions
A black bear may be trained using Handle Animal. A 4th-level druid, 6th-level outdoorsman, or 4th-level ranger may take a black bear as an animal companion with an effective druid level modifier of -3.
